SGS has signed a CHF 1.4 million contract with Burnley-based Pipeline Induction Heat Ltd (PIH), the world’s leading field joint coating (FJC) services provider, to deliver coating and polymer testing over the next three years.

SGS will conduct pre-qualification and pre-production testing along with research and development at its facility in Trafford Park, Manchester, providing operational efficiencies for PIH and their customers. The work being undertaken is performed according to both international and project specific requirements.

This contract is the result of a long-standing relationship between SGS and PIH which dates back to the opening of the Coating Laboratory in 2010. It further develops the relationship between the two companies through the provision of new solutions for existing industry problems, for example with the new initiative ‘Taking the Laboratory to the Pipe’ for overseas on-site pre-production testing.

SGS’s international experience and local expertise means the company is able to deliver services in the lab and on-site, enabling quicker project roll-out and deadlines to be met – thereby avoiding costly over runs and/or penalties. SGS’s teams meet local content requirements in-country, including in hard to reach locations, challenging environments and climatic conditions.

Offering fast turnaround times to ensure end-user satisfaction, SGS becomes part of its clients’ quality control process, helping to solve any problems, as well as to define best practice and ensure consistency of coatings applications. Traditionally, pre-qualification is conducted under ‘perfect’ conditions, at SGS however assurance can be offered in the field – with pre-qualification conducted in situ.

“We have enjoyed a long working partnership with PIH and understand their emphasis on the highest quality service, we are well-versed in the specific requirements for their testing needs,” said Christian Booth, ‎Operations Manager at SGS’s Manchester laboratory. “Our close working relationship with PIH’s technical team helps us to meet their high quality standards while being able to offer cost effective, safety driven, flexible solutions.

“Reducing risk in the oil & gas sector, SGS’s high standards and safety record go beyond mere compliance and extend to testing the test parameters of the test methods themselves. We are proud to support process and project development, helping clients – including PIH – to apply as many optimal joints as possible, exploring the application of new materials to new products and testing the viability of future coatings.”

“Over the past 12 months SGS has demonstrated an excellent understanding of our needs and that of our customers for a fast and professional testing service on several key projects.

We’re confident that with this new three-year agreement SGS will continue to develop its testing capabilities, whilst maintaining the high levels of safety and quality expected in the oil and gas Industry today.” said Lynda Barron, Technical Manager at PIH.
