Oman has recently published measures to regulate adult and children’s jewelry to ASTM standards. These will become effective on January 16, 2018.
On July 16, 2017, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry of the Sultanate of Oman published Ministerial Decision 148/2017  of July 10, 2017 in Official Gazette No. (1202) . This piece of legislation mandates two ASTM standards for jewelry products. These are:
- ASTM F2923 ‘Standard Specification for Consumer Product Safety for Children’s Jewelry’
- ASTM F2999 ‘Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Adult Jewelry’
These new standards are Omani mandatory standards and will become effective on January 16, 2018.

At the time of this publication, ASTM F2923-2014 for children’s jewelry and ASTM F2999-2014 for adult jewelry are the latest version of these two standards. Each of these two ASTM standards has its own set of specifications for specific materials or components, including requirements for the following:
- Cadmium content otherwise conforming to soluble, migratable or extractable cadmium
- Lead content
- Nickel release
- Soluble elements under ASTM F963
- Jewelry containing batteries
- Liquid-filled jewelry products
- Magnets or magnetic components
- Mechanical properties
- Warning statements
Stakeholders are advised to ensure that their jewelry products comply with the latest jewelry safety requirements for the Omani market.
