The Refinery of Milazzo is one of the most complex and advanced refineries in the Mediterranean and in Europe. A joint venture corporation whose shareholders are Eni and Kuwait Petroleum, the Refinery of Milazzo is capable of processing a wide range of raw materials, obtaining products in line with the highest quality specifications.
To ensure the safety and efficiency of the plant, the Refinery of Milazzo appointed SGS to manage its maintenance and improvement program on March 24, 2016. This exercise is critical to the health and safety requirements of the refinery and SGS was selected due to its proven experience in carefully executing the shutdown of plant turn-arounds to optimize productivity.
SGS has worked with the Refinery of Milazzo on health and safety construction activities for over 17 years, improving safety standards. The adoption of several tools has enabled the refinery to achieve a target of zero accidents during the turn-around. This result is even more impressive considering the numbers:
- Involvement more than 2,000 company personnel
- Induction of 1,717 workers for first entry
- Verification of 483 pieces of scaffolding and 410 health and safety plans
- 1,068 inspections
- 298 safety coordination meetings
- 148 employees rewarded for safety
- 13,456 work permits
All health and safety activities have been performed by a dedicated SGS team of 30 experts at the peak of the project.
The Refinery of Milazzo has also rewarded SGS with a contract for construction health and safety for both maintenance and new projects. Furthermore, having completed a full Occupational Risk Assessment document for the refinery in 2013, SGS will also supply continuous updates of the document and related occupational health and safety issues.
