USA Department of Energy Revises Energy Conservation Regulations for Battery Charges
SAFEGUARDS | Electrical & Electronics NO. 141/16
On 12 August 2016 the DOE enacted the final rule for energy conservation regulation for Battery Charger efficiency. Compliance with the standard is required by 13 June 2018.
New Efficiency Standard for Battery Chargers - Summary Highlights
Starting on 13 June 2018 all battery chargers covered by this rule imported into the USA or manufactured in the USA must comply with the new standard. The new standard, effective June 13 2018 will preempt existing state regulations in Oregon and California. DOE analysis indicates an energy savings of 11.2% relative to the energy use of these products.
Table 1: Energy Conservation Table Requirements Starting June 13 2018
|Product Class||Product Class Description||Battery Energy||Special Characteristic or Battery Voltage||Adopted Standard As A Function Of Battery Energy (kWhrs/yr)|
|1||Low-Energy||5 Watt Hours or Less||Inductive Connection In Wet Areas||3.04|
|2||Low Energy, Low Voltage||Less than 100 WH||Less Than 4 Volts||0.1440 * E batt + 2.95|
|3||Low Energy, Medium Voltage||4 to 10 Volts||For E batt <10Wh, UEC = 1.42 kWh/y E batt ≥10 Wh, UEC = 0.0255 * E batt + 1.16|
|4||Low Energy, High Voltage||Exceeding 10 Volts||0.11 * E batt + 3.18|
|5||Medium Energy, Low Voltage||100 to 3000 Wh||Less Than 20 Volts||0.0257 * E batt + .815|
|6||Medium Energy, High Voltage||Equal To Or Greater Than 20 Volts||0.0778 * E batt + 2.4|
|7||High Energy||Greater than 3000 Wh||0.0502 * E batt + 4.53|
