Art services expert Yan Walther recently spoke to Kennedy Fine Art (KFA), a leading contemporary art services company, about SGS’s services, capabilities and experience in the sector.

Focusing on analytical services and the advantages offered by modern imaging techniques, the interview focuses on how SGS uses technology to evaluate aspects of an artwork such as dating, presence of past restoration, coherence of the materials and techniques found in a given artwork with what is expected from a particular painter, school or period, fragility and degradation processes.

In the interview, Yan describes how SGS provides systematic, thorough and standardized condition reports to clients through its global network of experienced and accredited paintings conservators in key locations (New York, London, Paris, Geneva, Brussels and Luxembourg). Trained to the company’s own processes and methodologies, using proprietary software developed by SGS with templates based on museum best practices and rigorous inspection procedures, the team deliver standardized reports that ensure coherence and traceability of artworks and their state of conservation globally.

Intriguingly, Yan also shared two case studies with Kennedy Fine Art, each demonstrating how technology has helped the owners of an artwork to identify underdrawings and retouching to fully understand their investments.
