SGS is supporting the Highway of Heroes Tribute, honoring every fallen Canadian soldier with a living, breathing memorial; a tree planted for each.

Soil testing at each planting site for nutrients and texture, as well as for potential detriments like sodium and chloride, allows for determination of the appropriate amendments to improve soil to best establish and support the growth of these memorial trees. Testing will take place along the route of Highway 401 from Trenton to Toronto, a stretch of which is dedicated as the Highway for Heroes.

Soil test reports provide:

  • Soil pH
  • Macronutrients (phosphorus, potassium, magnesium)
  • Cation exchange capacity and base saturations of cations
  • Nutrient recommendations
  • Sand-Silt-Clay % (Texture)

With the aim of planting 117,000 native trees, soil testing assures that soil conditions will be suitable for the establishment of the trees planted along the route.

Canada’s Highway for Heroes

Ontario’s Macdonald-Cartier Freeway, better known as Highway 401, is the main transportation corridor linking Windsor with Quebec City, and crosses through some of the most densely populated areas in Canada. In 2007, a 170 kilometer portion of the highway stretching from Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Trenton to the Don Valley Parkway (and later Keele Street) in Toronto was designated the Highway of Heroes, reflecting its use as the route for funeral convoys carrying fallen Canadian Forces service men and women from CFB Trenton to the coroner’s office in Toronto. Soil Testing Services

In Canada, and around the world, SGS agriculture laboratories offer soil testing services to help farmers and foresters, to understand the composition of the ground in which they are plating, and also to improve fertility, optimize yield and select the most appropriate crops to sow, trees to plant.
