Fast, efficient and highly accurate, SGS India has adopted new micro bead based transgenic protein detection methods to identify the presence of GMO in crops.

Conventional transgenic protein detection methods, used to identify the presence of genetically modified (GMO) crops, are laborious and time-consuming. To address this issue, and the needs of clients, SGS has adopted a new, highly sensitive, technology that can perform the same tests and deliver equally accurate results, but in a fraction of the time.

Micro Bead Based Detection

The new method is based on a micro bead based detection system. This is very accurate and sensitive in comparison to the existing antibody coated ELISA plate methods, which are used worldwide. Our laboratory in India operates this new technology, and the advantages for clients are its potential for high throughput, ease of use and excellent sensitivity. Micro bead based detection is currently being used in India to detect transgenic proteins in GMO cotton seeds. The method can be replicated in other regions for trait analysis of cotton, corn, soya and other GMO seeds.

This micro bead based detection system is more economical compared to any existing commercial ELISA kits available for the delivery of transgenic protein detection or quantification.

GMO Identification Services

Despite the increased use of GM crops worldwide, controversy still exists in some countries with regard to their use. GMO crops are modified to improve resistance to pests and herbicides, as well as increasing yields and productivity, without compromising nutritional value. As the use of GMO crops increase, the fast, accurate and efficient analysis of transgenic protein integrated is a growing concern.

With years of experience in this field, SGS provides GMO testing services, wherever you are based, that offer you both proven methodologies and results that will be recognised worldwide. Micro bead based detection, for different GM crops and proteins, is currently available at our facilities in India, and will be rolled out to more of our laboratories in the coming years.

Approved and Accredited Laboratories

To maintain our reputation for independence, integrity and innovation, our GMO testing laboratories operate under strict guidelines and are ISO 17025 accredited and ISO 9001:2008 certified. Staffed by highly experienced scientists and technicians, our labs have also earned the approval of several feed associations. Participation in proficiency testing for GMO events is completed annually and we have an International Seed Testing Association (ISTA) accredited laboratory for GMO testing.
