Understanding the procedures and requirements for toys destined for Japan can be complex. In a free podcast presentation, we will introduce you to the main toy requirements to help you deliver safe and compliant products to the Japanese market.

Worth over 675 billion yen in 2013, the Japanese toy market imports almost one third of its toys. Toys destined for export to Japan are regulated by two main standards: the Japan Food Sanitation Law (JFSL) and the Safety Toy Standard (ST Standard). These two standards - one mandatory, one voluntary – are respectively regulated by the Japanese Minister of Health, Labor and Welfare and by the Japan Toy Association.

We have published a free podcast to help you navigate the complexities of Japan’s Food Sanitation Law and Safety Toy Standard. Available on demand, this 10-minute presentation examines the country’s regulatory landscape in detail to help you easily access this valuable and growing market.

Market Safe Toys to Japan

The podcast begins with an overview of the Japan Food Sanitation Law, listing the toy categories and materials covered by this law. We also give a short summary of products which are not considered toys and therefore do not fall under the scope of the JFSL.

The podcast then turns its attention to the Safety Toy Standard and ST Toy Mark Program. This section further details the ST Standard Part 3 on the chemical properties of toys and prohibition of certain specified substances.

JFSL and ST Approved Laboratories

We have approved and designated laboratories in Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam to test for compliance with JFSL and with the ST standard.
