SGS is Now a Member of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council
(GENEVA, SWITZERLAND, 14 FEBRUARY, 2014) SGS the world’s inspection, testing, verification and certification company is pleased to confirm that it has joined as a member in the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC). The Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) is a global initiative dedicated to promoting sustainable tourism efforts around the world. The GSTC works to expand understanding of and access to sustainable tourism practices; helps identify and generate markets for sustainable tourism; educates about and advocates for a set of universal principles, as defined by the Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria. The Criteria, a set of voluntary principles that provide a framework for the sustainability of tourism businesses across the globe, is the cornerstone of the initiative.
The GSTC aims to provide its members with access to tools, services and opportunities to strengthen their operations, policies and practices towards offering a more sustainable product. As a member, SGS will be able to contribute towards the creation and review of sustainable tourism standards, have access to an array of resources and tools and, benefit from or contribute to market access opportunities.
‘We shall be part of the International Standards Working Group. This working group is critical for the ongoing development of criteria and will serve as a hub in the GSTC’s push for greater adoption by the world’s tourism and travel community’, says Geraldine Koenig, Global Project Manager, Hospitality.

Part of SGS Hospitality strategy
Hospitality has been earmarked as a sector with much potential.
Over the decades, tourism has experienced continued growth and deepening diversification to become one of the fastest growing economic sectors in the world. Modern tourism is closely linked to development and encompasses growing numbers of new destinations and dynamics which have turned tourism into a key driver for socio-economic progress. Governments are actively encouraging the growth of this sector in a number of countries, through new legislations or standards making their way, subsidy programs, and marketing efforts to promote their destinations.
Today, the business volume of tourism equals or even surpasses that of oil exports, food products or automobiles. Tourism has become one of the major players in international commerce, and represents at the same time one of the main income sources for many developing countries.
With emerging new destinations and spenders making their way, emerging trends and needs will have to be fulfilled.
SGS has decided to service this sector in a more structured way and with a value proposition that better responds to the needs of the sector, to be part of that whole dynamics. This means that not only must we be aware of the importance of sustainability to the tourism community but we must also keep close relationship with some key concerned stakeholders.
