In March 2012, SGS Azeri Ltd was awarded a contract with Baku Shipyard LLC to provide independent third party inspections and construction supervision services for a shipyard construction project in Baku, Azerbaijan. This project involves an experienced team of seven civil and mechanical engineers and is expected to be completed by September, 2013.

A joint venture for the development of a new shipbuilding yard in Azerbaijan, Baku Shipyard LLC is comprised of the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR), Azerbaijan Investment Company (AIC) and KV Enterprises BV, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Keppel Offshore and Marine Ltd.

Baku Shipyard LLC is developing its new yard on a greenfield site located adjacent to the existing SCS Deep Water Jacket Factory, approximately 24 kilometers south of the Baku city center. The new yard is designed to support the construction of a variety of vessels ranging from offshore support vessels to tankers as well as ship repairs and conversions. In September 2013, the new shipyard in Baku will launch its first vessel.

During the geological investigation, topography survey, newly bench-marked installation processes and reclamation and compaction activities, SGS provided the Baku shipyard project with third party supervision and presented itself as a professional inspection, verification, testing and certification company. SGS involvement in this particular project continues to help minimize risks related to the quality of works in order to achieve successful and punctual completion.

SGS is supervising concrete, steel structure, electrical and mechanical works and controlling site documentation. SGS is providing construction supervision specifically tailored to safeguard the successful completion of the Baku shipyard facility. Experienced SGS personnel are effectively controlling and supervising every aspect of the construction work. By performing these diverse duties, SGS services ensure that the Baku shipyard will be completed on time and on budget and that all components, installations and construction are compliant to relevant regulations and meet quality standards.

A permanent on-site SGS team of supervisors is implementing quality requirements in accordance with guidelines mandated by British project design company, Royal Haskoning. Uninterrupted SGS supervision is reducing technical risks and preventing construction errors. SGS inspectors are verifying that all construction is in compliance with local building regulations, quality standards, Royal Haskoning guidelines, specified technical documentation and the construction permit. SGS authorities are working to correctly complete and issue all documents, declarations and certifications necessary for the Baku Shipyard LLC project.
