SGS Group Germany is a dedicated testing and certification partner in a national research project promoted by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research called “SafeBatt”, named by the federal government as a landmark project of the National Platform for Electric Mobility. SafeBatt project aims to develop secure batteries for hybrid and electric vehicles. 15 different partners from German automotive, supplier industries and from science academia are working to increase the safety of the batteries and develop ideas on how to improve on their everyday usability. The focus is on, for example, improved cell materials and new types of semiconductor sensors. In future, these should capture safety parameters, such as chemical processes, and increase in pressure in the battery cell.

SafeBatt project will contribute to increase the safety of batteries for electric vehicles over the entire life time and in extreme situations.

Similar aim is driven in Battery Test House of SGS in Munich where specialists for electric mobility identify potential hazards and suggest ways on how the important criteria for safety are to be harmonized internationally. In addition, SGS aims to improve the process for risk analysis, qualification and certification testing of batteries and to standardize the important steps in order to accelerate market access and reduce costs which is ultimately the key to widespread acceptance of electric vehicles among the consumers.

Other project partners are in addition to the Technical University of Braunschweig and the Technical University of Munich, the MEET the University of Münster, the ICT of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, BASF SE, BMW, Daimler AG, German ACCUmotive GmbH & Co. KG, ElringKlinger AG, Evonik Litarion GmbH , Infineon Technologies AG, Li-Tec Battery GmbH, Volkswagen AG and Wacker Chemie AG.
