National and international authorities require that efficacy claims of cosmetic products should be substantiated scientifically. SGS just launched a dedicated laboratory in Germany for measuring important skin-associated parameters such as skin moisturization (Corneometer®), skin barrier integrity (Tewameter®), wrinkle-reduction (PRIMOS®) or deodorant-efficacy (sniff-test). Dermatologically controlled studies are also part of our new study portfolio.
The cosmetic industry and consumer organizations worldwide need proof for safe (skin compatible) and effective products. Efficacy claims such as “anti-aging”, “moisturizing” and “wrinkle-reduction” can be substantiated scientifically using state-of-the-art measurement techniques. Dermatologists investigate skin compatibility (human patch tests), anti-pimple-efficacy (also Sebumeter®) and anti-dandruff-efficacy (also VisioScan®). Eye compatibility of decorative cosmetics is investigated by an ophthalmologist. Since most of these tests and studies require strictly controlled climatic conditions before (acclimatization period) and during measurements our new test lab needs to be strictly acclimatized with narrow tolerances at 22 ± 1°C and 50 ± 5 % relative humidity. All tests can be combined with a detailed questionnaire (galenic parameters, cosmetic acceptance, compatibility and efficacy) giving the consumers’ opinion on the products.
