SGS, the world’s leading inspection, verification, testing and certification company, announced today a plan to expand the service portfolio in its Poitiers, France facility to include cell-based bioassays. The SGS laboratory in Poitiers is one of its two GLP-compliant bioanalytical laboratories in Europe. These bioanalytical services offered in support of preclinical and clinical development include method development and validation, pharmacokinetics by LC-MS/MS and immunoassays, biomarker analysis, immunogenicity testing and now cell-based bioassays.

Because biopharmaceuticals represent the fastest growing segment within the pharmaceutical sector, SGS believes the need for cell-based assays in support of drug development will continue to increase. The implementation of cell-based bioassay services in Poitiers involves investment in the latest generation of flow cytometers and a BL-2 (Biosafety Level 2) suite. Concurrently, SGS has recruited a senior Study Director with cell-based assay experience in the fields of apoptosis, necrosis, proliferation, oxidative stress, lysosomes, mitochondrial perturbation, and extracellular/intracellular factors. An adequate recruitment plan is in place over the next six months to bolster customer demand.

“SGS is making this investment to meet the growing need for these services”, said Alain Renoux, General Manager for the Life Science Services facility in Poitiers. Currently, SGS is engaged in transferring two cell-based bioassays from a Top Pharma client. This new investment complements the 500 square meter (5,400 square feet) expansion plan that was undertaken in October 2010 to increase its capacity for biological assays.

With 17 laboratories offering contract analytical and bioanalytical services, SGS leverages its strong global network to deliver harmonized solutions to large pharmaceutical and biotechnology firms. In addition to testing services for the bio/pharmaceutical market, SGS also provides clinical trial management (Phase I to IV) and services encompassing clinical pharmacology studies, data management, pharmacovigilance and regulatory consultancy.
