The textiles and garment industry in Indonesia is currently in a mode of rapid growth. While China is the world’s largest exporter of textile merchandise, lower-cost countries such as Indonesia are catching up due in part to favorable labor costs. In the past two decades, a 158% increase was observed in the total export value of textile merchandise from Indonesia1. In 2010, statistical data shows that Indonesia has exported apparel and non-apparel products worth a total value of over 4 billion USD to the United States2 and 9 billion USD to the European Union (EU)3.
Indonesia has become an active hub for sourcing of textile products by major leading buyers from many global companies. The growth rate is estimated at 13% per year. In 2009, nearly 2,000 garment and textile companies in Indonesia were valued at 54,610 billion Rupiahs (approximate 6 billion USD)6.
The rapid growth of the textile and garment industry and sourcing activities by global apparel buyers in Indonesia contribute to the increasing demand for a one-stop service solution. In order to provide this solution, physical and chemical testing capability is being offered at SGS Indonesia. This new capability will provide a full spectrum of testing, inspections and audits for our clients.
