SGS, the world’s leading inspection, verification, testing and certification company, was assigned a contract to provide complex Pavement Engineering for the Reid Alexander Interchange Project in Perth, Australia by Abigroup in May 2011.

Reid Alexander Interchange, a design and construction road project within the City of Swan and City of Stirling, in the northern metropolitan suburbs of Perth, Australia, involves a grade-separated interchange at the intersection of Reid Highway and Alexander Drive, aimed at improving road safety.

In order to assess the performance and ensure best quality of the newly constructed highway, Abigroup, one of Australia’s leading engineering and construction contractors, looked for a reliable third-party testing company.

Due to its first-rate experience and know-how in similar projects, SGS Australia was awarded the contract to execute periodic pavement surveys on a sub-contractor basis as part of Pavement Engineering services.

Throughout the entire contract, SGS is measuring the top layer of the road for rideability and roughness properties, by comparing the acquired and processed data with the contract specification limits. Drawing on its extensive expertise and competence in the construction sector, SGS’s team of highly skilled experts provides a wide portfolio of pavement performance assessments, including FWD Deflection, Roughness Survey and Rutting, applying a Digital Multi-Laser Profilometer (DMLP), Skid Resistance Measurements, using the British Pendulum Tester and other Visual Inspections to detect any surface unevenness and pavement failures.

Applying complex Pavement Engineering services, SGS conducts pavement assessments on a regular basis; just after the construction stage, one year and three years after the construction completion as well as carrying out a final survey after seven years for the end of a correction period phase, to ensure the best quality and performance of the newly constructed highway. During this time, SGS equipment is regularly updated to incorporate the latest technologies in accordance with national and international standards and requirements.

In addition, SGS experts provide the client with rapid and comprehensive monitoring and reporting services and assistance in issuing prompt conformance reports for final approval.

With SGS’s help, the construction of the Reid Alexander Interchange is being thoroughly tested, to guarantee the best quality and safety standards.
