SGS Life Science Services is pleased to announce that its facility in Wavre, Belgium has achieved prequalified status from the World Health Organization (WHO) effective May 31, 2011. WHO prequalification demonstrates that a laboratory has met established global quality guidelines on Good Practices for National Pharmaceutical Control Laboratories and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). Approval for the WHO’s prequalification programme also means being listed on the WHO website as eligible to test and release life saving medicines for the treatment of diseases such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and for reproductive health.

The prequalification of the SGS Belgium laboratory follows the recent prequalification of the SGS Chennai, India facility in January 2011. “The members of the WHO’s prequalified laboratories is limited to a list of 20 facilities.” said Anne Hays, Executive Vice President for SGS Life Science Services, “SGS is proud to have the distinction of being the only organization with two prequalified laboratories represented in WHO’s list.”

Located in the suburbs of Brussels, SGS Life Science Services Belgium has been in operation since 1971. This facility has passed inspection by regulatory authorities (US-FDA and EMA) and operates under Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), Good Clinical Practices (GCP), current GMP (cGMP) and ISO 17025. With its dedication to quality, its considerable experience in the field of biologics testing, and the fact that many of the medicines currently in the pipeline for FDA approval are biologics, SGS Life Science Services Belgium is poised to service the bio/pharmaceutical industry into the future.
