Electrical Engineering Magazine is the leading publication in its sector, reporting on the latest news, applications and product innovations in the electrical product market. The February issue featured an article by Danny Wong, sustainability consultant for SGS Hong Kong Ltd., entitled ‘Requirements for ErPs’.

With the Ecodesign Directive (2009/125/EC), the EU aims to reduce the environmental impact and energy consumption of electrical and electronic equipment, throughout the entire product lifecycle. In order to reduce energy consumption, design issues are now at the forefront. With the Directive, the impetus is placed on manufacturers to factor in the effect their products have on the environment and to consider how to reduce product consumption of power and energy.

Manufacturers must also ensure that their products qualify for CE conformity. So, both Implementing Measures and the CE mark must be taken into account by manufacturers in order to legally sell their products within the EU.

The EU is due to release a working plan in October 2011, including a list of affected product groups set for implementation between 2012 and 2014. The Directive will be scrutinized in 2012 for its effectiveness, particularly with regard to products that do not directly consume energy but affect consumption nonetheless.

For many manufacturers, navigating through ecodesign requirements, observing Implementing Measures from the old Directive, and obtaining the CE Mark can all seem like a daunting set of obstacles in the path of getting their product to market. To that end, we at SGS can help ensure a manufacturer’s product meets all legal EU requirements.
