SGS launches PEAR to assess the impact of packaging on the environment.

With more consumers worldwide and an overcrowded market, the quantity of packaging being put into the waste stream is still on the rise, having a strong environmental impact. Besides the usual legal and technical requirements, cost optimization aims or marketing duty, packaging manufacturers have to take into account the environmental impact of their packaging throughout its entire life cycle.

To help manufacturers optimize packaging, SGS has created a packaging assessment tool called PEAR, Packaging Eco-Assessment Rating. This tool is able to measure the environmental impact of packaging designs and advise greener alternatives. PEAR builds a quick and economical diagnostic of several options in terms of packaging, logistics, end of life characteristics, etc.
