SGS Offers Increased Material Analysis Capabilities to the Auto Industry
Johnson Controls, one of the world’s leading suppliers of interior equipment and electronics to the automotive industry, has transferred one of its material analysis labs to SGS Germany GmbH.
As part of its long term corporate strategy, Johnson Controls closed the development centre and administrative facilities at its Grefrath branch in Germany in 2009. Of the 200 employees affected by the move, 90 were offered employment opportunities with other Johnson Controls branches.
A further positive solution emerged through the takeover of the materials analysis lab by SGS Germany GmbH, a long time supplier of material tests to the automotive industry. SGS will relocate the material analysis lab to Herten, Germany in order to concentrate all its Automotive Standard Testing Services in one lab location. Together with the lab equipment, SGS also took on the eight experienced lab analysts, to ensure a smooth transition and quick resumption of operations. The move enables SGS CTS Automotive to offer nearly all the tests required by automotive producers, from tests on materials and composites, all the way to parts or complete systems.
New Addition to the Network
The takeover is similar to the 2004 acquisition by SGS of the German Institute Fresenius network of testing labs and the 2008 takeover of the Munich-based Center for Quality Engineering from Nokia Siemens. In both situations SGS took over the testing capabilities and staff and managed to quickly reinforce the status of both these SGS sub-brands as multidisciplinary competence center with high levels of expertise.
SGS Germany GmbH has been collaborating with Johnson Controls for many years and is one of the preferential suppliers to this automotive interior specialist. The collaboration will now also include material testing services offered through the laboratory recently taken over by SGS.
