For the first time, the SGS NDT Training and Examination Center conducted a Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD) course which took place from November 17 – 27, 2009 in Shanghai, China. This course is accredited by the British Institute of NDT (BINDT) and meets the requirements of the EN 473 Standard. At the end of the course, an optional examination in accordance with the SNT or PCN/EN 473 was offered. The training course proved to be a great success, with fully booked classrooms and a pass rate of over 80%.

Due to high demand, SGS will continue to provide Non-Destructive Testing training courses in China and other regions (PDF 97 KB) on a frequent basis. The next regular courses are scheduled for March 2010 in SGS Netherlands, followed by courses in May, August and November in SGS Shanghai. By special request the courses can be held in SGS affiliate or client locations.

Insufficient knowledge in the application of the new TOFD technology led to flaws remaining undetected, thereby causing a general lack of confidence in the TOFD application. It is therefore essential to educate NDT technicians about the correct use of this test method and the interpretation of its results.

SGS’s capability to provide quality TOFD courses in both English and Chinese languages helps the industry to perform more reliable and accurate inspections which in turn improve product standards.

Time of Flight Diffraction

Time of Flight Diffraction, is an advanced Non-Destructive Testing method and a relatively new technology in China. It is gaining more attention as an essential and safe NDT technique for flaw detection.

As an Ultrasonic Testing technique, TOFD has significant advantages in terms of speed and the detection of defects. It is also the most accurate defect sizing technique in general use. Furthermore, TOFD combines a high detection rate with a very high reliability in pre-service and in-service inspections.
