September 29th, 2009 marks a new era for SGS Taiwan. After 57 years of operation, SGS Taiwan has finally acquired its own property in Kaohsiung. It is located in the Kaohsiung Nanzih Export Processing Zone (NEPZ), south of Taiwan. The colors of the building reflect SGS branding surrounded by solid grey tiles and orange strips. The building’s bright colors make it distinguishable while presenting an elegant feel.
The opening ceremony was hosted by Eastern Asia Chief Operating Officer - Dennis Yang, and was graced by the presence of SGS CEO Chris Kirk, Chief Finance Officer Rich Tobin, Consumer Testing Executive Vice President Frankie Ng, Systems and Services Certification Executive Vice President Malcolm Reid, and China and Hong Kong Chief Operating Officer Helmut Chik. We also invited local government officers, such as Mr. JieShan Chen (Taiwan BSMI/TAF Chairman), Mr. JiaReui Ou (NEPZ Director), many other VIPs and about 450 key clients to attend this opening ceremony.
“With continuous business growth in the past 10 years at Kaohsiung, SGS services have become well-recognized by clients. We will continue to improve efficiency, develop new service models and deliver better service to customers. Thanks to this new building, we are now able to better help streamline our processes and allow for the integrated advancement of our laboratory services not only in the “Materials and Construction Laboratory” but also in the “Environmental Laboratory” and “Multi-Chemical Laboratories,” COO Dennis Yang said during the ceremony.
SGS CEO Chris Kirk praised the achievement of the local management team, saying, “This accomplishment enhances SGS customer services in the Kaohsiung district and addresses the increasing demands owing to the economic and industrial development in southern Taiwan. There has been an outstanding revenue growth of more than 100% over the past 10 years at SGS Kaohsiung; this growth comes mainly from Laboratory Testing Services. These are truly commendable statistics.”
After the traditional Lion Dance and Drum Show, over 450 guests toured the new building and its facilities. They were impressed with the scope of SGS’ services and the state-of-the-art layout. The successful ceremony was capped off with a cocktail party.
SGS Taiwan is one of the longest established affiliates in the Asia Pacific Region. Mr. Chris Kirk mentioned that “many first-rate professionals and managers were able to develop their careers within the company. Under COO Dennis Yang’s leadership, managers and staff dedicated themselves to the growth and success of the organization.” SGS Taiwan will continue to maintain the standards of excellence for which it has been held in very high regard and will continue to assist in sustaining Taiwan’s future economic success.
What Was the Main Driver Behind the New Lab in Kaohsiung?
For decades, SGS Taiwan had been leasing several buildings in Kaohsiung to accommodate different operations. With the increasing business growth and the difficulty to find reasonably priced space to accommodate such developments, finding a new site to integrate all operations together became necessary. In addition, SGS Taiwan also hoped for a modern, energy–saving building that would ensure employee health and safety. The appropriate structure was finally found after a year of searching. The building belonged to a Japanese company, Mabuchi Motor, and has a land area of 15,000 square meters. Located in the Nanzih Export Processing Zone (NEPZ), the SGS Kaohsiung building is in a convenient location for major clients and fulfills all the requirements for service integration, expansion, and sustainable business development.
Which SGS Business Lines are Represented?
Except for Automotive, all other SGS business sectors are in operation at the new building.
What are the Main Tests/Services Conducted in the Lab?

The second floor is dedicated to SSC, which includes a training center with 3 training rooms, as well as the offices of the Minerals, Oil, Gas and Chemicals, GIS and Agriculture divisions. The third floor is dedicated to the Food Lab and Environmental Lab while the fourth floor is a multi-chemical lab serving CTS, LSS, Minerals and OGC.
