On December 18, 2008, the European Parliament adopted the revised European Directive relative to the safety of toys. This was published in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU) on June 30, 2009.

The revised EU Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC came into force on July 20, 2009. To become a legal document in European Member States, the directive has to be implemented in national legislation. Member States have 18 months to do so.

Toys made available on the EU market shall be required to comply with the requirements. However, there are transitional periods as follows:

  • Two years: Both the old and the new directive may be used during the transitional period (until July 20, 2011)
  • Four years: For the chemical requirements of the directive, the transitional period is 4 years (until July 20, 2013)

Key changes are listed in our regulatory bulletin SafeGuardS n°124/09 (PDF 123 KB).
