SGS Keeps Pressure Vessel Manufacturers Updated with the Latest NDT Technologies
SGS, the world’s leading inspection, verification, testing and certification company, organized a seminar to introduce two techniques for inspecting pressure vessels using Advanced Non-Destructive Testing Methods (NDT). Held in Ulsan, Korea, the course was designed to train the quality and design department personnel of pressure vessel manufacturers.
The first technique in focus was Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD), which is a sensitive and accurate ultrasonic method of testing welds for defects. TOFD uses a fully-computerized system to scan and evaluate discontinuities in terms of height, length, and position. One of the important advantages that TOFD offers is the absence of radiation.
The other method discussed was Acoustic Emission (AE), which is used to analyze emitted sound waves caused by defects or discontinuities. With AE, it is possible to locate structural defects and to monitor the tendency of discontinuities.
Norbert Trimborn, NDT expert at the SGS Global NDT – Special Examinations Center in the Netherlands conducted the section about TOFD while SungKyu Yoo from SGS Korea led the section about AE.
With such training courses, SGS aims to help clients increase their international competitiveness by keeping them up-to-date with the newest technologies.
SGS also supports the Industrial Manufacturing and Trade sector in assessing suppliers, supervising during production and keeping track of delivery schedules. SGS has the necessary accreditations to provide certification services for various international markets, including the Russian Federation, Iran, Colombia and Egypt. SGS is also a Notified Body for most European directives such as PED, ATEX, Machinery and Lifts Directives.
SGS Industrial division also provides comprehensive Non-Destructive Testing services using both conventional and advanced NDT systems. Available in more than 30 countries around the world, our NDT services are provided by qualified inspectors in accordance with international standards.
