As a result of a 5-year capacity building program based on an innovative ‘Build-Operate-Transfer' (B.O.T.) process, his Excellency Mr. Henri Djombo, Minister of Forest Economy of the Republic of Congo, received from the hands of Mr. Alain Verney, Managing Director of SGS Congo, the symbolic key of the new national Forest Product Export Control Service (SCPFE) during an official and well-attended “transfer” ceremony. The SCPFE Internal Journal (PDF 1.2 MB) relates (in French) the details of the event which took place on 26 August 2008 in Pointe Noire (Congo).
Minister Djombo said it was a great day to receive from SGS the SCPFE, an organization that ensures a transparent foreign commerce for all timber products from Congo, and an example which other countries of the Congo Basin should follow. As also stressed out by the Director of the Service, Mr. Frederic Massalo, Minister Djombo said that further components of the Service, fauna and traceability, remain to be developed and implemented in a similar way to prevent the illegal trade in fauna products and control the legality of timber exports from Congo. SGS will also provide continued support to the SCPFE in order to accompany the Service towards the independent certification of its Quality Management System to ISO standards.
