With a 11,000-sq. ft. facility in Union, New Jersey, U.S.A., SGS HRL provides sunscreen testing, dermal patch, efficacy/claim support and photobiology. SGS HRL testing and reports are accepted by foreign regulatory bodies, including Asia, Australia, Europe and South America. SGS HRL performs FDA, ISO, COLIPA and AS/NZ testing of sunscreen products and also offers photobiology, dermal patch and in-use tests. 

Founded in 1981, SGS HRL is a leading independent research organization for the cosmetic, personal care industry with a qualified pool of human  subjects.

Extending our capabilities

SGS HRL will add the following expertise to our service portfolio:

Sunscreen Testing

  • In-Vivo SPF and UVAPF testing
  • In-Vitro Critical wavelength/Broad Spectrum Testing
  • Static (dry), water resistant-80 minutes, water resistant-40 minutes and extended water resistance testing 

Dermal Patch Testing

  • Repeated Insult Patch Test (RIPT)
  • Cumulative Irritation Test (CIT)
  • Primary Dermal Irritation Test (PDI)
  • SGS HRL consulting board-certified dermatologists oversee testing, review and sign reports
  • SGS HRL patch room has a rated capacity of up to 1,000 subjects per day

Consumer Products – safety/efficacy/claims support testing

  • Various types of in-use tests for ocular, skin care, cosmetic, personal care and household products, including wipes and specialty items, such as beauty tools and wearable fitness equipment
  • Ocular instillation tests as well as in-use tests of eye area products conducted under the supervision of HRL consulting board-certified ophthalmologists
  • Large, multi-racial human subject population
  • In-house beauty salon to support specific hair claims
  • Research-trained licensed cosmetologists

Photobiology Testing

  • Phototoxicity (PT)
  • Photoallergy (PA)
  • SGS HRL board-certified dermatologists oversee testing, review and sign reports
  • SGS HRL photobiology room has a rated capacity of up to 120 subjects per day
