Coffee Solutions

Ensure the safety, quality and sustainability of your coffee products, processing and supply chains.

Consumers expect coffee products on store shelves and restaurant menus to be of high quality while delivering an uplifting, flavorful experience and an authentic connection to the flavors of the region of origin. At the same time, regulations surrounding the safety, quality, authenticity and traceability of coffee are becoming more stringent. We can help you to meet consumer and regulatory demands, so you can make your business more efficient and your products more marketable. SGS is leading the way in the new era of food safety, transparency of data, and technology.

Scientist Testing Coffee Beans in Lab

Testing

Using cutting-edge technology and the most up-to-date testing standards, we provide multiple forms of microbiological, chemical, physical and sensory testing to analyze the safety, quality and authenticity of coffee. Through a global network of food laboratories connected with the coffee belt, we can help you to comply with buyer specifications as well as import/export regulatory requirements for certificates of analysis, validation of process preventive controls and environmental monitoring.

SGS’s advanced chemical analysis includes pesticide residues, mycotoxins, heavy metals, acrylamide, MOSH/MOAH, caffeine, and polyphenol compounds. We test coffee beans (green and roasted), ground and soluble coffee, soil, irrigation water and packaging.  Samples from farm to retail are tested.

Authenticity and Integrity

Due to the significant price difference between Arabica and Robusta, there is an economic incentive to illicitly replace Arabica with Robusta. SGS helps defend against coffee fraud by verifying the authenticity of coffee, distinguishing between the two types. Using our validated DNA testing methods, we employ an advanced fragment analysis that allows us to discriminate between species and to assess their relative amount in a sample.

Our isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) testing can be used to verify geographic origin, test the authenticity of ingredients labeled as natural, identify undeclared additives and detect the use of synthetic fertilizers in organic products.
