Sometimes, risk cannot be eliminated; it can only be mitigated. Risk management helps organizations optimize workflows to quickly and effectively identify and mitigate potential pitfalls. As a result, organizations that manage risk at all supply chain levels and actively embed risk management throughout their processes are better positioned to address these events as they arise.
Identifying plausible reasons for undesirable effects is a process termed root cause analysis (RCA). This process helps trace a (potential) problem to its origins to identify suitable resolutions. When appropriately and efficiently executed, RCA can prove to be a powerful tool to prevent and solve underlying issues systemically – the process can be thought of as taking a proactive stance, contrary to its counterpart, being reactive when issues arise.
Companies that proactively embed risk management and RCA in their daily practices have shown promising results, ranging from passing audits, gaining certifications more quickly, reducing expenditures, increasing revenue, and gaining or maintaining a competitive edge in the industry.
