From Fabrication to First Oil: Why FPSO Readiness Starts Early

September 06, 2026

Successful first oil from an FPSO is rarely determined during commissioning alone. It is the culmination of thousands of decisions made throughout engineering, procurement, fabrication, inspection and integration, each contributing to long-term safety, reliability and operational performance.

Building reliability from Day One

Independent quality assurance, inspection, material verification and non-destructive testing help confirm that equipment, structures and systems meet project specifications and applicable standards. Identifying defects, documentation gaps and nonconformities during fabrication can reduce rework, schedule delays and operational risk.

Process safety studies and regulatory verification further support a safe and compliant transition from construction to operation.

Angus Maciver, Global Development Manager of Energy at SGS, said: "First oil should be viewed as the result of assurance built into the entire project. Decisions made during fabrication and commissioning directly influence safety, reliability and asset performance for years to come."

Protecting integrity throughout the asset lifecycle

Operational readiness establishes the inspection strategies, baseline data and digital asset records required to manage integrity from startup onward, providing the foundation for risk-based inspection, condition monitoring and long-term asset optimization. It can also help preserve asset value throughout modifications, life-extension projects, redeployment campaigns and eventual decommissioning, extending the operational and commercial life of the asset.

We support operators, developers and EPC contractors with integrated quality assurance, inspection, non-destructive testing (NDT), process safety and asset integrity solutions that help reduce project risk, protect capital investment and support safe, efficient first oil.

Meet us at the FPSO, FLNG & FSRU Global Summit 2026 in Shanghai to discuss how our integrated assurance, operational readiness and asset integrity programs can help deliver safer startups and longer-term asset performance.
