SGS Showcases Expertise in Agricultural Commodities at 11th Africa Grain Trade Summit in Zanzibar

We are delighted to share our recent participation in the 11th Africa Grain Trade Summit (AGTS) organized by Eastern Africa Grain Council in Zanzibar. The event in Tanzania gathered over 200 delegates from governmental and private organizations under the theme “Resilient Grain Markets: Unlocking Africa’s Food Security Potential”.

The topics discussed included food security, supply chains, investments and efficient innovations in agriculture.

SGS’s Vice President Agri Commodities and Crop Science, Paul Harrison, delivered a presentation on how inspection and certification can serve as catalysts for trusted grain trade in Africa. He emphasized the role of standardization and highlighted the testing methodologies enabling grain market players in Africa to ensure food safety and quality.

With a booth set up at the summit, we were able to share our global and local expertise in agricultural commodities with attendees. Namely, high interest was driven by the SGS grain testing capabilities from state-of-the-art laboratories in Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) and Mombasa (Kenya).

SGS capabilities in agricultural commodities in East Africa

SGS has a long-standing presence in East Africa, providing comprehensive services for agricultural commodities. In Kenya, SGS has been delivering inspection and superintendence services for 75 years, while testing of agricultural products started over 25 years ago. In Tanzania, SGS began agricultural commodities testing in 2005. Across both countries, SGS covers a wide range of products, including feeds and ingredients, grains and oilseeds, soft commodities such as sugar, coffee, tea, spices, cocoa, palm oils and agricultural liquids.

Our services for agricultural commodities in East Africa include:

  • Laboratory Analysis: Comprehensive testing for contaminants such as microbial presence, pesticide residues, heavy metals, aflatoxins, mycotoxins and veterinary drug residues; proximate composition tests (moisture, crude protein, ash content, crude fat, lipids, fiber, carbohydrates); mineral and elemental analyses; vitamin testing; absolute gamma radiation; natural compound analysis; and preservatives testing.
  • Inspection and Superintendence: Draft surveys, grading and supervision of loading and discharge operations.

Both SGS laboratories in the region are ISO 17025 accredited, whereas the Mombasa facility is also GAFTA and FOSFA approved, ensuring reliable and internationally recognized results.
