Advancing Tanzania’s Mining Sector: SGS Enhances Testing Capabilities

August 04, 2025

We are proud to highlight a recent feature in Mining Weekly, titled “Unlocking testing, verification value in East Africa”, which explores the growing impact of SGS’s advanced laboratory and mobile testing services in Tanzania’s mining industry.

With a presence in Tanzania since 1962, SGS continues to support the country's mining evolution through a network of strategically located facilities. Our operations include four state-of-the-art laboratories, with geochemical and environmental testing located in Mwanza, and agricultural, oil & gas, chemical, and trade-related testing services based in Dar es Salaam. All labs are accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 standards, ensuring high-quality, reliable data.

The article emphasizes the recent expansion of analytical capabilities at our Mwanza laboratories, which now serve clients across the entire mining lifecycle—from exploration and development to production and closure. These capabilities include fire assay, multi-element analysis (including ICP-OES and aqua regia digestion), rapid leach testing, and carbon/sulphur and graphite determination, all tailored to meet Tanzania’s geological and operational demands.

One of the standout developments featured in the article is the deployment of mobile sample preparation units (MSPUs). These on-site mobile labs enable exploration and mining companies to receive fast, accurate results without the delays and costs associated with transporting samples long distances. Calibrated specifically to each site’s geology, MSPUs offer a new level of flexibility and responsiveness that helps companies make time-sensitive operational decisions with greater confidence.

In addition to laboratory and mobile services, SGS offers field-based analytical solutions designed to meet increasingly complex environmental, compliance, and stakeholder requirements. This end-to-end testing and verification ecosystem gives clients the business intelligence they need to reduce risk, maintain compliance, and strengthen investor trust.

With mining investment in Tanzania continuing to grow, SGS remains committed to providing innovative, locally relevant solutions that combine global best practices with deep in-country expertise.
