The GHG Compliance and Carbon Accounting Training is a programme developed by SGS Academy UAE to help logistics operators build in-house capability to measure, report and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in line with UAE climate regulations.

The primary aim is to establish clear ownership of GHG accounting practices within every logistics business operating in the UAE.

The course methodology is built on the internationally recognized GHG Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard, with awareness of the ISO 14064 series woven in throughout.

Course Objectives

The training course is designed to equip nominated GHG compliance owners and their teams with the skills to:

Understand UAE climate regulations and how they apply to logistics operations, including MOCCAE, DCCE and ADX requirements.
Apply the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard to identify and categorize Scope 1, 2 and 3 emission sources.
Build the calculation and documentation skills needed for external audit and MRV submission.

Course Content

Participants will learn how to:

Map emission sources and build a data collection process across fleet, facilities and third-party transport.
Calculate fuel, electricity and facility emissions using recognized emission factors and worked UAE examples.
Account for third-party transport and Scope 3 emissions, including engaging subcontractors for activity data.
Prepare a GHG reporting file and audit trail suitable for third-party verification.
Identify and prioritize decarbonization opportunities, from fleet electrification to route optimization.

Programme Structure

Module 1 - UAE Climate Regulation Overview: the UAE Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative and sectoral obligations, the MOCCAE reporting framework, DCCE requirements for logistics, ADX sustainability reporting, upcoming mandatory disclosure timelines and penalties for non-compliance.
Module 2 - GHG Protocol Basics and ISO 14064 Awareness: the GHG Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard, the seven greenhouse gases and GWP/CO2e conversion, organizational boundaries and consolidation approaches, base year selection, and how the ISO 14064 series relates to the GHG Protocol.
Module 3 - Scope 1, 2 and 3 for Logistics: direct emissions from owned or leased fleet, refrigeration units and generators; Scope 2 market-based versus location-based accounting; which of the 15 Scope 3 categories apply to logistics businesses; and double-counting risks in multi-party logistics chains.
Module 4 - Emission Source Mapping and Data Collection: building an emission source inventory and a data collection RACI matrix, fuel tracking through telematics and fuel cards, electricity billing and smart meter integration, engaging suppliers for Scope 3 data, and handling common data gaps and proxies.

Module 5 - Fleet Fuel Emissions Calculation: emission factor sources including IPCC and DEFRA, the fuel volume times emission factor methodology, calculations across diesel, petrol, CNG, LPG and HVO fuel types, fleet segmentation, and normalization per tonne-km or vehicle-km.
Module 6 - Electricity and Facility Emissions: location-based and market-based grid calculations, green tariffs and power purchase agreements, refrigerant emissions from cold stores and reefer trucks, stationary combustion, and a practical warehouse energy audit exercise.
Module 7 - Third-Party Transport and Scope 3: upstream and downstream transport, spend-based versus activity-based methods for haulage, sea and air freight and last-mile delivery calculations, and engaging subcontractors through data request templates.
Module 8 - Data Quality, MRV and Reporting Template: data quality indicators, the Tier 1 to Tier 3 methodology, internal review and sign-off procedures, preparing an audit trail, and completing the GHG reporting template in a hands-on exercise.
Module 9 - Decarbonization Opportunities: fleet electrification roadmaps for UAE conditions, renewable energy procurement for warehouses, route optimization and load consolidation, supplier engagement, and setting a short, medium and long-term net-zero strategy.

Day 1 Quiz: a 30-question multiple-choice assessment covering UAE regulations, GHG Protocol fundamentals and Scope definitions. Pass mark: 70 percent.
Day 2 Practical Exercise: participants complete a GHG inventory for a hypothetical UAE logistics company using provided data sets, assessed for methodology accuracy and documentation quality.
Team Presentation: teams present their decarbonization roadmap and key findings, evaluated on approach, feasibility and communication.
