Microbes can live in a wide variety of conditions and utilize and produce a staggering range of substances. They can breakdown, and even recycle, waste and pollutants. They may 'consume' metals and cause severe corrosion or provide nutrients to plants. Bioreactors allows us to study these capabilities and control or optimize these processes.
The utilization of (micro)biological processes to produce valuable compounds or reduce waste is often much more sustainable and environmentally friendly than chemical or physical processes. The versatility in microbial activity and interaction between species allows microbes to play a role in almost any industrial process, while utilizing less energy and producing less toxic output. By monitoring microbial activity and optimizing the growth conditions and microbial consortia the process speeds and yields can be greatly enhanced.
We offer bioreactor studies in several locations and centralize most capabilities in our Global Biosciences Center. Here our experts have all the tools they need to execute almost any microbial study.
Our bioreactor facility is uniquely set up to mimic various natural occurring processes and simulate biological processes with industrial interest. The bioreactor technology allows us to fully control conditions in which microbes live. For instance, we can alter nutrient supply, adjust temperatures or add harmful contaminants while monitoring the various metabolic products produced by the microbes. Coupling the bioreactor services with monitorization of the microbial cultures using molecular techniques, we provide the required insights to further optimize industrial biological processes or to understand natural occurring processes.
