Spanish Hospitality Industry Milestone: Hotel Port Europa Receives The PLEDGE on Food Waste Gold Certificate

June 23, 2026

We proudly mark a milestone in Spanish hospitality sustainability by certifying Hotel Port Europa to the Gold level of The PLEDGE on Food Waste.

Hotel Port Europa in Calpe, Alicante, achieved the highest category of this international scheme for reducing hotel food waste. The PLEDGE on Food Waste certification helps demonstrate compliance with Law 1/2025 on the prevention of food loss and waste, mandatory in Spain since April 2026. It also helps build trust among sustainability stakeholders.

This prestigious sustainability certification demands 90% compliance with the model's criteria.

David Verano, Business Assurance Food Manager at SGS in Spain, said: “This recognition reflects Hotel Port Europa's commitment to sustainability and efficiency within the sector.”

Spanish Hospitality Industry Milestone: Hotel Port Europa Receives The PLEDGE on Food Waste Gold Certificate

The hotel’s Director, Enrique Pérez, and Head Chef, Emmanuel Alejandro Gulias, stated that this achievement is the result of the entire team’s daily efforts, a step forward that reinforces their dedication to sustainability and positions them as a benchmark on the Costa Blanca.

This project and certification align with our IMPACT NOW for sustainability initiative, aimed at promoting services that directly contribute to ecological transition, environmental protection and reduction of environmental impact.

To achieve Gold, Hotel Port Europa was rigorously audited against seven key pillars:

  • Process documentation: record and standardize operational best practices
  • Employee engagement: continuous training and active involvement of all kitchen and dining room staff
  • Waste monitoring: accurate measurement and technological tracking of discarded food
  • Pre-preparation management: optimize the purchasing chain and storage of raw materials
  • Cooking and serving processes: implement high-efficiency techniques in cooking and in the dynamics of buffets
  • Customer engagement: active awareness of guests during their stay
  • Post-consumer management: responsible treatment and management of waste at the end of service

Together with Hotel Port Europa, we are strengthening the foundations of sustainable tourism in Spain, demonstrating that efficiency and zero waste in hotel kitchens are already a measurable and certifiable reality.
