From Digital Risk to Digital Trust: A New Approach to Securing What Matters

October 14, 2026

Digital transformation has changed more than the way businesses operate. It has changed the nature of trust.

As organizations become increasingly dependent on cloud environments, connected systems, artificial intelligence and digitally enabled operations, the boundaries of traditional cybersecurity are becoming harder to define. A vulnerability in one part of an organization can have implications far beyond the technology itself, affecting business continuity, regulatory compliance, customer confidence and operational resilience.

At the same time, the risk landscape is evolving faster than many organizations can assess it.

Cybersecurity is no longer simply about protecting systems from known threats. Organizations also need to consider how artificial intelligence is being developed and deployed, how emerging technologies may introduce new vulnerabilities, whether critical infrastructure can withstand disruption and how prepared they are for the cryptographic changes that may accompany the post-quantum era.

The question is increasingly shifting from “Are we secure today?” to “How continuously can we understand and manage our exposure?”

We believe this shift is helping redefine the role of digital assurance.

Seeing exposure from the outside in

Traditional security assessments can provide valuable insight into an organization’s security posture at a particular point in time. However, digital environments are constantly changing. New technologies are deployed, configurations evolve, vulnerabilities emerge and threat actors adapt.

This creates a need for a more continuous view of exposure.

Through our majority stake in NetSentries, we are strengthening our ability to support organizations with this evolving need. NetSentries brings specialist expertise in cybersecurity and digital assurance, supported by its AI-driven NST Assure platform, which provides an outside-in view of an organization’s exposure and validates it in ways that reflect how an attacker could approach its environment.

The objective is not simply to identify vulnerabilities. It is to help organizations turn exposure into actionable, evidence-based assurance, supporting a transition from periodic testing towards Continuous Threat Exposure Management.

This approach is particularly relevant for banks, financial institutions and regulated enterprises, where the consequences of digital disruption can extend well beyond the technology function.

Bringing two dimensions of assurance together

Our collaboration with NetSentries brings together specialist digital security expertise with SGS’s established global capabilities in testing, inspection and certification.

For us, the significance goes beyond adding another cybersecurity capability to our existing portfolio.

It reflects a broader evolution in assurance: helping organizations build confidence across increasingly interconnected physical and digital environments.

As businesses navigate digital transformation, security, compliance, resilience and trust can no longer be viewed as isolated considerations. They increasingly overlap.

For example, organizations introducing AI may need to consider not only cybersecurity, but also AI-related risks, governance, regulatory expectations and the resilience of the underlying infrastructure. Similarly, organizations operating critical systems need to understand how digital vulnerabilities could affect wider operational continuity.

A more connected risk landscape calls for a more connected approach to assurance.

Preparing for risks that are still taking shape

Some of the challenges organizations face today are familiar. Others are still emerging.

AI is developing rapidly, creating new opportunities while introducing questions around security and risk. Post-quantum cryptography is prompting organizations to consider the resilience of cryptographic systems against future quantum capabilities. Critical infrastructure is becoming increasingly connected, creating new dependencies between physical operations and digital systems.

These developments make it difficult to rely solely on historical approaches to risk management.

We recognize that organizations need the ability to identify where their exposure is changing, understand what that exposure means and establish evidence that their controls and safeguards are working as intended.

This is where digital assurance can play a broader role, helping organizations move from responding to individual risks towards building a more continuous understanding of their digital resilience.

Trust needs to keep pace with technology

For more than 145 years, we at SGS have built our business around helping organizations establish confidence in quality, compliance and performance.

Digital transformation is extending that same need for confidence into new areas.

Trust is fundamental to sustainable business success. As digital technologies and AI-enabled systems become increasingly embedded in critical business operations, organizations require greater confidence in the security, integrity and resilience of their digital environments.

A more continuous definition of digital trust

We believe digital trust cannot be established through a single assessment or a one-time technology investment.

It is built through visibility, validation, resilience and the ability to respond as the digital environment changes.

By combining NetSentries’ capabilities with our global assurance expertise, we are expanding our ability to support organizations across cybersecurity, AI assurance, critical infrastructure resilience and post-quantum readiness.

As businesses continue to digitize, adopting new technologies is only part of the journey. Organizations also need confidence that those technologies can be trusted, secured and sustained.

For us, the future of digital trust is not only about knowing where risk exists. It is about having the visibility, expertise and assurance needed to keep pace with it.
