SG 025/26
The AFIRM Restricted Substances List (RSL) Version 11 has been released for 2026, reflecting the latest updates in chemical management for apparel, footwear and textiles to support safer materials and more sustainable supply chains.
On February 1, 2026, AFIRM released Version 11 of its RSL, per the organization’s annual review cycle. This update maintains alignment with global regulatory changes and ensures the list reflects the most current understanding of chemical safety. While the core structure remains consistent with previous versions, Version 11 introduces targeted revisions to enhance protection against allergens, endocrine disruptors and persistent pollutants. These changes are particularly relevant for the textile and footwear industries, where material safety and compliance expectations continue to rise.
The AFIRM RSL Version 11 introduces several critical updates to substance limits, testing methodologies and guidance. Key updates include:
- Addition of Acetophenone Azine (CAS No. 729-43-1) under the group "Acetophenone, 2-Phenyl-2-Propanol & Related Substances", with a 50ppm limit due to its skin sensitization potential
- Significant tightening of bisphenol restrictions, including reduced limits for BPS, BPB, and BPF in leather (500 ppm), a new 100 ppm limit for BPA in polycarbonate materials and a lower 200 ppm limit for all bisphenols in other materials
- Enhanced coverage of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), including updates related to a new French Decree and the reinstating of several substances to Appendix B
- Introduction of a 200ppm limit for Formamide in specific products such as yoga, play, and baby mats
- Numerous test method updates are recommended for cyclosiloxanes, heavy metals, organotin compounds and solvents, along with a lowered reporting limit of 50 ppm for all UV absorbers and stabilizers
The release of the AFIRM RSL Version 11 for 2026 further strengthens the management of hazardous substances across increasingly complex global supply chains. These updates underscore the industry’s continued shift toward increased safety, greater transparency, reduced risk and closer alignment with tightening international regulations. As a result, companies are better positioned to build consumer trust, differentiate themselves in competitive markets and contribute to a safer, more responsible industry overall.
