China Releases a New Product Standard for Textile Products for Newborns – FZ/T 08002-2022

China has issued a new product standard FZ/T 08002-2022 (Textile products for newborn). This new standard comes into effect on October 1, 2022.

The Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has issued a new industry standard for textile products for newborns – FZ/T 08002-2022. Included in the No. 10 announcement on approved industry standards in 2022, it comes into effect on October 1, 2022.

Scope

This document is applicable to textile products intended for newborns, including clothing, socks, hats, belly band, gloves, towels, towels (quilt), sleeping bags, and bedding, etc.

Definition of a newborn

A newborn is a baby from birth to 28 days.

Technical requirements

1. Requirements for shell and filling materials

  • Soft and light-colored pure cotton fabrics should be used in textile products with direct contact to skin for newborns
  • Fuzzed fabrics should not be used as clothes for newborns
  • Coated fabrics, fabrics printed and dyed with pigments, and fabrics treated with functional finishing agents (e.g. antibacterial, flame-retardant) shall not be used as textile products for newborns
  • Down filling materials shall not be used as textile products for newborn babies. Wadding filling materials shall comply with the requirements of GB 31701 category A and GB 18383

2. Requirements for internal quality

The requirements for internal quality shall comply with the rules of table 1 of FZ/T 08002-2022. The test items include fiber content, formaldehyde content, pH value, decomposable carcinogenic aromatic amines, odor, heavy metal contents(Pb, Cd), phthalates, burning behavior, cords and drawstrings, sharp points and sharp edges for attached components, removal force for attached components, fiber shedding, absorption, shell and lining colorfastness (colorfastness to water, perspiration, washing, saliva, rubbing, urine, breast milk), extractable heavy metal content, seam strength, tensile strength for clothes belt.

3. Requirements for appearance quality

The requirements for appearance quality shall comply with the rules of table 2 of FZ/T 08002-2022.

4. Other requirements

Other requirements include those for attached components, sewing, structural design and the remains of broken sewing needles. For more details on these requirements see clause 5.4 of FZ/T 08002-2022.
