SGS Announces Availability of PCR Testing for the Food Industry

November 24, 2023

In the food industry it is essential to carry out microbiological control in raw materials, water, finished product, operators, or handlers, as well as in facilities and different environments. The result obtained from these analyses is critical to continue with the activities of the production chain. In this context, SGS, the world's leading testing, inspection and certification company, announces the availability of PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) tests for the detection of pathogens.

It is a molecular biology technique that allows to obtain a large number of copies of a specific DNA fragment, making it much easier to identify with a very high reliability the microorganisms of interest. In addition, pathogen detection through the application of rapid methods such as PCR has become an effective alternative to traditional methods, as it shows shorter turnaround times.

SGS uses Suretect™ technology for the detection of the most frequent pathogens, using standardized AOAC (Association of Analytical Communities) methodologies. The technique consists of a pre-enrichment to favor the growth of microorganisms and then the PCR methodology is carried out, using state-of-the-art equipment in software and consumables.

What are the main benefits?

  • Turnaround time: Results are obtained in 2 to 3 days, compared to traditional methods that can take 7 to 10 days.
  • Use of kits and equipment with state-of-the-art technology that allows the optimization of analysis times.
  • Ability to process up to 96 samples in a single run, including their analysis controls, which guarantees the quality of the results.
  • Special and exclusive facilities for the execution of these tests that avoid cross-contamination.
  • Highly trained and professional human talent to carry out the tests guaranteeing reliable results.

"This type of testing is really important for the food industry because pathogens reaching consumers can cause illness and even death. These contaminated products reaching the food chain, even if discovered before they cause harm, can cause irreparable damage to a brand and its manufacturer. At the very least, the release of contaminated food products will result in a costly recall and destruction exercise," explains Denisse Estrada, Health & Nutrition leader in Mexico.

These tests are available at the SGS laboratory located in Naucalpan, State of Mexico, which has ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation, granted by the Mexican Accreditation Entity (EMA) and approved by government agencies; in addition to international standards.
