AI Transparency Services

Achieve EU AI Act Article 50 transparency requirements and build trustworthy AI with SGS.

Transparency is a specific legal requirement under Article 50 of the EU AI Act, in force since August 2, 2026, with a further obligation on machine-readable marking of certain generative AI (Gen AI) systems applying from December 2, 2026.

Organizations must ensure users understand when they are interacting with AI, recognize AI-generated content where required, and are informed when emotion recognition or biometric categorization systems are used.

We help you assess and verify your Article 50 transparency practices through applicability assessments, readiness reviews, testing services and independent assurance.

FAQ

Article 50 addresses transparency obligations for providers and deployers of certain AI systems. Depending on the system, content and organizational role, these obligations include:

  • Article 50(1): inform natural persons that they are interacting with an AI system, unless this is obvious from the circumstances and context of use
  • Article 50(2): mark AI-generated or AI-manipulated synthetic audio, image, video or text outputs in a machine-readable format and ensure they are detectable as artificially generated or manipulated
  • Article 50(3): inform natural persons exposed to emotion recognition or biometric categorization systems, where their use is legally permitted
  • Article 50(4): disclose deepfakes and certain AI-generated or AI-manipulated text published to inform the public on matters of public interest
  • Article 50(5): provide the required information clearly and distinguishably, at the latest at the time of first interaction or exposure, and in an accessible manner

We help you establish practical processes, responsibilities, technical measures and evidence to ensure Article 50 requirements are implemented consistently across relevant AI systems and content workflows.

Transparency is closely linked to several core trustworthiness principles:

  • Human agency and oversight
  • Accountability
  • Technical robustness
  • Fairness and non-discrimination
  • Privacy and data governance
  • Explainability

Strong transparency practices help you demonstrate that AI systems are developed and managed responsibly while supporting ongoing regulatory compliance.
