ASTM has published a new consumer safety specification for nursing pillows, designated ASTM F3669-24.
In September 2024, ASTM International published a new standard consumer safety specification for nursing pillows with the designation ASTM F3669-24. The standard addresses the hazards identified by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), which included falls, suffocation and positional asphyxiation.
The standard defines nursing pillows as, “a product intended, marketed, or designed to position and support an infant close to a caregiver’s body while nursing or bottle feeding”. These products are usually stuffed, filled or molded foam, U-shaped in appearance, and generally rest upon, wrap around or are worn by a caregiver in a seated or reclined position.
Provisions in the standard include:
- Lead in paint
- Small parts
- Hazardous sharp edges or points
- Toys accessories
- Removal of components
- Permanency of labels and warnings
- Infant restraint system
- Infant support surface firmness
- Inner wall firmness
- Infant containment
- Seam strength
- Caregiver attachment strength
- Marking and labeling
- Instructional literature
The standard was developed by the ASTM Highchairs and Hook-On Chairs Subcommittee (F15.16) and approved on September 1, 2024.
