New York Proposes to Regulate Formamide in Children’s Foam Mat Products

The US state of New York is intending to regulate formamide in foam mat products for young children. If approved, the law become effective on December 1, 2025.

In January 2023, the US state of New York introduced S02983 ‘Formamide-free Children’s Product Act’ to regulate formamide in children’s foam-mat products. The proposed law would add new title 4 to Article 37 of the state’s environmental conservation law. 

Highlights of the proposal are summarized in Table 1.

In the European Union (EU), formamide is restricted in foam materials in toys intended for children under 36 months or in other toys intended to be placed in the mouth (Appendix C to Directive 2009/48/EC, consolidated version December 2022).
