Spotlight on Standards: ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety) and ISO 50001 (Energy Management)

Quality InsightsApril 21, 2023

Time to shed some light on two crucial standards. The aim is to introduce, outline and remove a lot of uncertainty.

“A scary number of standards”

One of our clients once asked: “There are a scary number of standards, can you help to clarify some of them?” With this in mind, we launched Spotlight on Standards to highlight two popular standards in each edition of Quality Insights. The aim is to introduce, outline and remove a lot of uncertainty.

This time, we focus on:

ISO 45001 – occupational health and safety management systems – requirements with guidance for use

What is ISO 45001?

ISO 45001 is a globally recognized occupational health and safety management system (OHSMS) standard. An OHSMS is fundamental to an organization’s risk management strategy.

The standard aims to prevent work-related injuries and ill-health. It also seeks to provide safe and healthy workplaces to help reduce the 2.78 million work-related fatalities and 374 million non-fatal injuries and illnesses reported each year (ILO figures).

ISO 45001 outlines key requirements and aims to improve overall health and safety performance. It encourages internal and external stakeholder focus as part of adopting a risk-based approach.

Key benefits

Certification follows successful completion of an audit and enables you to:

  • Protect your workforce and others, such as visitors
  • Comply with legal requirements
  • Facilitate continual improvements
  • Align it with other management system standards like ISO 9001 and ISO 14001
  • Align with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3, 5, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 16

Homing in on critical areas

From identifying issues to prioritizing safety and updating processes, ISO 45001 has several key requirements to fulfill.

Key requirement areas:

The standard specifies the requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining and improving an EnMS that can enhance energy efficiency in crucial areas, including reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

The aim is to enable an organization to follow a systematic approach in achieving better energy performance and an EnMS. ISO 50001 also establishes an international framework for energy supply and use in industrial, commercial and institutional organizations.
