E-DNA and Microplastics Testing for 44west

Jan 21, 2026

As the 44west team prepared to join the World’s Toughest Row – Atlantic, SGS supported the project by testing key elements the team will rely on during the journey. At the race start in La Gomera, SGS took the opportunity to carry out microplastic testing in coastal waters and environmental DNA (E-DNA) testing in the forests of the Garajonay National Park, reflecting our commitment to Nature – a key pillar of the SGS IMPACT NOW sustainability initiative.

Testing E-DNA & Microplastics in La Gomera

Understanding the health of marine and natural environments is becoming increasingly critical. Biodiversity loss is projected to be one of the top global risks in the coming decade, while plastic pollution continues to impact oceans worldwide. Reliable environmental data is essential to help organizations, authorities and communities make informed decisions to protect and preserve ecosystems.

By carrying out E-DNA and microplastic sampling in La Gomera, we aim to build a clearer picture of conditions in the local natural environment using scientifically robust, non-invasive methods.

Which tests were carried out?

While supporting the 44west team ahead of their Atlantic journey, we carried out:

  • E-DNA sampling at the Garajonay National Park to detect DNA traces left in water, soil and vegetation. Analysis of those samples was carried out at our facilities in Portugal
  • Microplastic sampling at a local beach in La Gomera targeting plastic particles between 500 microns and 5 millimeters, to assess visible plastic contamination. Sample analysis was conducted at our laboratories in Singapore

These tests were conducted using established scientific methodologies designed to minimize environmental disturbance.

What will the test results reveal?

The testing program is expected to deliver:

  • Clear data on microplastic pollution levels and hotspots in coastal waters
  • Insight into the types and sources of plastic debris affecting the marine environment
  • A detailed picture of forest biodiversity within Garajonay National Park
  • Early identification of protected or invasive species, supporting conservation efforts
  • Data that can inform environmental management, protection and prevention strategies

Together, the results will help build a clearer understanding of both ecosystem health and pollution pressures in the area.

Using tools like environmental DNA transform how we monitor ecosystems. They enable us to monitor without intrusion and protect nature without disrupting it.

Supporting sustainability and environmental protection

Racing under the banner ‘We row for biodiversity’ the 44west crew is using their challenge as a platform for change. Environmental testing plays a vital role in this, and in supporting broader sustainability goals. Non-invasive techniques such as E-DNA analysis help monitor biodiversity without harming fragile ecosystems, while microplastic testing provides essential data to drive pollution reduction and regulatory compliance.

By generating reliable, science-based insights, testing supports informed decision-making, helps protect marine biodiversity and contributes to global sustainability commitments aimed at reducing environmental impact and preserving ocean health.

Environmental testing beyond the expedition

By applying scientific expertise to real-world environments, we are helping build the data, trust and understanding needed to protect ecosystems and support a more sustainable future for our planet.

Beyond this project, and through our IMPACT NOW for sustainability suite of services, we offer a wide range of environmental testing and monitoring services to support clients worldwide, including:

  • E-DNA testing for biodiversity monitoring and invasive species detection
  • Microplastic and macroplastic analysis across marine and freshwater environments
  • Water quality and sediment testing
  • Environmental baseline studies and long-term monitoring programs
  • Regulatory compliance support and sustainability reporting

These services help organizations better understand environmental risks, meet regulatory requirements and actively support responsible environmental stewardship.

Looking beneath the surface
From coastal waters to the forest floor, understanding what lies beneath the surface is essential. Environmental testing helps turn observation into knowledge, and knowledge into action, supporting healthier ecosystems around the world. All this aligns with the Nature pillar of our IMPACT NOW for sustainability initiative.

How can SGS meet your environmental testing needs?

Successful businesses take environmental protection seriously. We support business and organizations with a range of testing, inspection and certification services to help them minimize their environmental impact and demonstrate compliance to national and international standards.

In addition to E-DNA and microplastics testing, we also carried out food content, food contact material, solar panel and UV testing, to assure the safety and quality of products being used by the 44west team.
