The Swedish Chemicals Agency, Kemi, is a supervisory authority under the Government and work to ensure that the companies' and society's chemicals control is managed in a positive way & strive to reduce the risk of humans and the environment getting harmed by chemicals.
In a recent surveillance, they had detected restricted substances in quantities exceeding EU limits in 47 out of 98 (48%) electronic products between 2022 and 2023, despite the presence of the CE mark on the label.
“The products are not acutely dangerous to the health of the individual consumer,” says inspector Mariana Pilenvik. “But they contribute to the total exposure of the dangerous chemical substances we are exposed to in our everyday life and therefore it is important to remove them from the market.”
The restricted substances found in the project were mainly:
| SUBSTANCE | FOUND IN | KNOWN TO CAUSE |
|---|---|---|
| Lead | Solders | Cardiovascular Diseases |
| Chronic Kidney Disease | ||
| High Blood Pressure | ||
| Fertility Issues | ||
| Cadmium | Carcinogenic | |
| Suspected to be Toxic to Reproduction | ||
| Phthalates | Plastic Components | Fertility Issues |
| Short-chain Chlorinated Paraffins (SCCPs) | Bioaccumulative | |
| Carcinogenic |
The most significant issues were identified in low-cost chargers, headphones, lighting and other consumer electronics from 24 unknown companies.
The Swedish Chemicals Agency reported 15 of the companies for suspected environmental violations, with all entities voluntarily withdrawing those products that contained excessive levels of hazardous substances.
