PFAS have been frequently observed to contaminate groundwater, surface water and soil. Cleaning up polluted sites is technically difficult and costly. If releases continue, they will continue to accumulate in the environment, drinking water and food.

Over the years, PFAS have increasingly been regulated due to their toxic effects and negative impacts on the environment, which had triggered both increased customer requirements as well as regulatory proposals to restrict the use of PFAS in products and processes.

Most notably, the EU has presented a proposal for a universal ban on all PFAS in all products with regulations such as:

In the United States, legislative updates and proposals are ongoing, such as:
