Promotional Offer for Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) Testing Services

July 18, 2023

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), which include perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), are a diverse group of synthetic chemicals that has been used in industry and consumer goods for many years. Their properties and function to repel water, grease, oil and/or dirt enable them to be used in the manufacture of a wide range of everyday consumer goods, such as:

  • Non-stick cookware
  • Wall paint
  • Grease-resistant paper, including food wraps
  • Furniture
  • Electronics (protective coating in various parts like PCB, LCD etc., dielectric films and liquid impregnates in capacitors and resistors, wiring & cables, and batteries)

PFAS have been frequently observed to contaminate groundwater, surface water and soil. Cleaning up polluted sites is technically difficult and costly. If releases continue, they will continue to accumulate in the environment, drinking water and food.

Over the years, PFAS have increasingly been regulated due to their toxic effects and negative impacts on the environment, which had triggered both increased customer requirements as well as regulatory proposals to restrict the use of PFAS in products and processes.

Most notably, the EU has presented a proposal for a universal ban on all PFAS in all products with regulations such as:

  • REACH Annex XVII (Entry 68) on C9-C14 PFCAs
  • POPs Regulation: update of PFHxS effective August 28, 2023

In the United States, legislative updates and proposals are ongoing, such as:

FEDERAL LEVELSTATE LEVEL
Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) proposes requirement to report the use of PFAS in all products of the past 10 yearsMaine: Reporting requirements of PFAS in all products apply from 2025
Minnesota and Oregon:  Prohibit PFAS in cookware from 2025
Others: Stipulating reporting rules and prohibition of PFAS in articles
