EU's New ErP and Energy Label Directives for Luminaries: EU 2019/2020 & EU 2019/2015

Introduction of New Directive

The new ErP directive EU 2019/2020 specifies the ecological design requirements for the following products:

1. Light sources
2. Separate control gears

These requirements also apply to light sources and separate control gear in containing products (e.g. luminaire) sold on the market. The new Energy label directive EU 2019/2015 specifies the requirements for energy labels of light sources and light sources used in containing products. The new ErP directive EU 2019/2020 and the energy efficiency labelling directive EU 2019/2015 will be implemented from 25 Dec, 2019 and enforced from 1 Sep, 2021, replacing the old ErP directives EC 244/2009, EC 245/2009, EU 1194/2012 and Energy label directive EU 874/2012.

Main Differences between New and Old Directives:

• Added household appliances, furniture and other products with lights in Scope
• The calculation of energy efficiency is changed from EEI to Ponmax, which added the factor of Ra and improves the requirement of energy efficiency
• Added flicker test: SVM, Pst LM
• Added the power consumption requirements of network standby
• Added minimum energy efficiency for separate control gear at full-load
• Switching cycle, starting time and warm-up time test are deleted
• Only 10 pcs of light source and 3 pcs of Separate control gears needed
• 3600h durability test, which 3000 hours lighted on, the test time is reduced, but the requirement of luminous maintenance is improved

Differences between EU 2019/2015 directive and EU 874/2012 directives:

• The calculation of energy efficiency level is changed from EEI to TM (lm/W), which is more intuitive
• The classification of energy efficiency level is changed to: Class A ~ Class G
• Higher energy efficiency requirements, Class A++ (EU 874/2012) is only equivalent to Class E (EU 2019/2015)
