SG 192/25
US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has published a direct final rule to incorporate the latest version of the ASTM standard for bassinets and cradles.
On December 12, 2025, the CPSC published a direct final rule to update 16 CFR 1218, the safety standard for bassinets and cradles. The rule incorporates the latest version of ASTM F2194-25 (Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Bassinets and Cradles) with no modification and will become effective on February 21, 2026, provided the CPSC does not receive significant adverse comments by January 12, 2026.
The standard defines bassinets and cradles as a “small bed designed primarily to provide sleeping accommodations for infants, supported by free-standing legs, a stationary base/stand/frame, a wheeled base, a rocking base, or a base which can swing relative to a stationary base. While in a rest (non-rocking or non-swinging) position, a bassinet/cradle is intended to have a head-to-toe sleep surface less than or equal to 10° from horizontal.”
ASTM F2194-25 introduces several updates, including new definitions, expanded scope to include aftermarket mattresses and updated performance requirements regarding height, stability, rigidity and electrically- and battery-operated product safety. The standard also provides improved warnings and instructional requirements, along with clarifications to existing requirements and editorial revisions that do not affect substantive safety requirements. The CPSC considers these updates to be an improvement in the safety of bassinets and cradles.
A read-only copy of the standard is available in the ASTM reading room.
