COP27: Causes and Effects of Climate Change

November 03, 2022

COP27 – the stage is set

Heads of state, ministers and negotiators, along with climate activists, representatives and CEOs, have descended on Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt, for the largest annual gathering on climate action.

The 27th Conference of the Parties (COP27) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change will build on COP26’s outcomes, to deliver action on an array of issues critical to tackling the climate emergency. These range from reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, building resilience and adapting to climate change impacts, to delivering on commitments to finance climate action in developing countries.

COP27 seeks renewed solidarity between countries, to deliver on the landmark Paris Agreement, for people and the planet.

Causes and effects of climate change

Fossil fuels – coal, oil and gas – are by far the largest contributor to global climate change, accounting for over 75% of GHG emissions and almost 90% of all carbon dioxide emissions.

As GHG emissions blanket the Earth, they trap the sun’s heat, leading to global warming and climate change. The world is warming faster than at any point in recorded history. Warmer temperatures over time are changing weather patterns and disrupting the usual balance of nature. This poses many risks to human beings and all life on Earth.

COP27 will cover these causes:

  • Generating power
  • Manufacturing goods
  • Cutting down forests
  • Using transportation
  • Producing food
  • Powering buildings
  • Consuming too much

COP27 will cover these effects:

  • Hotter temperatures
  • More severe storms
  • Increased drought
  • A warming, rising ocean
  • Loss of species
  • Not enough food
  • More health risks
  • Poverty and displacement
