Guidance on Complying with the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations for Products Sold in the UK

Background

The UK Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations were introduced to reduce the risk of fire-related injuries and fatalities associated with domestic upholstered furniture. The Regulations establish minimum fire performance requirements for materials used in upholstered furniture and require products to be appropriately tested and labelled before they are supplied to consumers in the UK.

Compliance involves more than simply testing a finished product. Manufacturers and suppliers must understand how individual components—including outer fabrics, interliners, foam fillings, and other upholstery materials—contribute to the overall fire performance of the product.
