Australia publishes Consumer Goods (Aquatic Toys) Safety Standard 2026

SafeGuardSToys and Juvenile ProductsJuly 07, 2026

SG 092/26

Australia has updated its aquatic toys safety standard, aligning warning statements with AS/NZS ISO 8124.1/ISO 8124-1.

On June 25, 2026, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) published a new Consumer Goods (Aquatic Toys) Safety Standard instrument. A transitional period of 24 months applies from the day after registration. The Consumer Goods (Aquatic Toys) Safety Standard 2020 will be repealed on June 25, 2028.

There are two main updates in the new instrument.

  1. Introduction of a ‘dynamic referencing’ approach – compliance is based on the requirements of clause 4.20 of the current version of AS/NZS ISO 8124.1 or ISO 8124-1(a), or any updated version of those standards from six months after the publication date of the update. A version of the standard ceases to be a compliance option two years and six months after the next version is published
  2. The warning statement has been aligned with the requirements in Annex B.2.6 of AS/NZS ISO 8124.1/ISO 8124-1. Aquatic toys within the scope of the instrument must carry the following warning in English, displayed in a clearly legible, visible and indelible manner:

Warning! This is not a life-saving device. Only to be used in water in which the child is within its depth and under adult supervision.

(a) The existing versions are AS/NZS ISO 8124.1:2023 Amd 1:2025 and ISO 8124-1:2022/Amd.1:2025.
