- The right device for the right purpose
Personal flotation devices are divided into three categories:
- a 50 Newton buoyancy aid is suitable for use close to shore
- a 100 Newton lifejacket is suitable for sheltered or near-shore waters
- a 150 N or 275 N lifejacket is needed for open waters
Remember: children weighing less than 25 kg should always wear a lifejacket, not a buoyancy aid.
- Size matters
A buoyancy aid or lifejacket must always be the correct size. In a real emergency, a device that is too large may not stay in place or may ride up too high. One that is too small may not work as intended.
When buying a lifejacket for a child, it is important not to leave room for growth.
- Try it before use
The device should be comfortable enough to wear so that discomfort does not become a reason to take it off. When you buy a new lifejacket or buoyancy aid, try it in the water too. It is important to know how it works for you.
Children – and babies in particular – should be accustomed to wearing the device in advance. It is also worth remembering that a baby’s nappy affects the floating position: a dry nappy may lift the baby’s bottom, while a wet nappy changes the position as it absorbs water. It is a good idea for children to wear their lifejackets already on the jetty and close to the shore.
- A lifejacket does not last forever
Test the device at the start of every boating season by going into the water while wearing it. If it no longer seems to keep you afloat properly, it is time to buy a new one. You should also replace it if the device or any of its components is damaged.
An inflatable lifejacket must be serviced every year. The gas cylinder attachment should also be checked regularly during the boating season.
The instructions for use usually state the maximum service life. Buy a new device once this period has expired, even if it appears to be intact and in good condition.
Never buy second-hand children’s lifejackets unless you know how they have been used and stored. Always check that the lifejacket works.
- Only a lifejacket that is worn can save a lifeA good device is intact, clean, functional and correctly fitted – and worn whenever you are out on the water.
